Save Atlantis by Smashing it to Pieces!
Okay, well, that was a joke. But since Bricks of Atlantis doesn't features a storyline of any sort, I thought I would make my own up! Not that a game of this type necessarily requires a story. The gameplay is along the lines of Breakout and Pong, where you bounce a ball back and forth against some bricks, destroying them one by one. It takes that tried and true game mechanic and plunges it underwater, which gives it a surprising amount of freshness, despite the fact that the formula is more than a few decades old. So yeah, it's easy to imagine that you're destroying Atlantis. It's not very nice of you, though.
Now, I know that a lot of you think that this is just another clone game and honestly, I don't blame you. If I've said it once, I've said it a million times. The pc game market is absolutely saturated with clones. Clones of this - clones of that. If you ever see a unique, original game hit the market, you can be sure that a dozen titles are going to be released in the following twelve months that are nothing more than cheap imitations. So yes, I understand where you're coming from. And in a sense, Bricks of Atlantis is a clone of Breakout. But it's a darn good one.
Hold Your Breath!
As I said, this game takes place underwater. Which makes sense, because according to legend, Atlantis is a sunken city. Due to its "aquatic nature," the game is full of sea-dwelling denizens. Some are good and some are bad. The most annoying, by far, are the jellyfish. They're only purpose is to make your life harder by getting in your way with their stupid jelly bodies. Luckily, hitting them with your ball will destroy them. You have to be careful though, as they're constantly on the move, so there's no telling where your ball will bounce once it hits them.
As annoying as the jellyfish are, there are fish that will help you just as much. After you free certain fish, they'll knock out blocks for you and some of them will even knock out marbles, which you can't even do yourself! Just this last game I freed a pair of swordfish and they helped me immensely!
As if you even needed to ask, there are plenty of power-ups to be had here. There is your usual fare, like power-ups that change the speed of the ball and the size of your bat, but there's also more nautical-themed ones such as a trident power-up that will make tridents fly across the screen, taking out anything in their path.
Plenty of Levels
You'll have plenty of levels to play here as well as a choice of where to start! You start with five different "level packs" and completing each unlocks a new one, with a bonus pack available after you complete them all. You definitely aren't going to have a shortage of levels to play, which is always a good thing.
A Worthy Take on a Classic Formula
While Bricks of Atlantis might not raise the bar for Breakout clones, it's a worthy entry and one that will be enjoyed greatly by those that prefer this type of gameplay.
