Not Another One!
It feels like I've written this a million times and perhaps I have, but I feel that it needs saying again - a large (and I mean large) portion of the computer game market is comprised of Breakout clones. You know Breakout - bounce the little ball off of your bat or bumper or bouncer or whatever you want to call it and try to destroy a series of bricks or structures or what not. It's a classic premise and what that has been absolutely beaten to death over the years. But, every now and then, something will come along that will somehow inject new life into a tired, beaten down concept. Hyperballoid Complete is one of these games. While it may not totally reinvent the genre, it definitely makes it worth playing again!
I was going to say something along the lines of "breakout on crack!" but I'm not even sure that that's extreme enough. Here you have a game that has been completely, I don't know, "jazzed up" to the point where it takes an overdone concept and makes it practically a must-play title.
Unfortunately, this is also one of those games that can't possibly be done justice by mere words. I know this sounds like a cheap ploy, but you really do have to experience Hyperballoid yourself to know what I'm talking about.
We're Not in Kansas Anymore
Now, I'm normally of the opinion that visuals don't make the game. While that still holds true, they as heck make it a blast to play. You'll not only destroy visually stunning blocks, but ones that move side to side, in and out, and just about every other direction that you can imagine. They game itself isn't in 3d, but the motions that these moving blocks made definitely make for an awesome effect.
And it's not just the graphical style of the pieces that make them so great. The insane and unpredictable movement of the blocks also make for some fun and equally unpredictable gameplay. A large portion of the strategy here is to try and think ahead, tracking where the ball is going to be in a few seconds. Well, all I can say is "good luck here!"
I've Got the Power
Of course, this game has a plethora of power-ups, just in case it wasn't crazy enough already. You'll get the usual stuff that will change the speed of the ball and the size of your paddle, but you'll also get stuff like machine gun emplacements and even power-ups that will split the ball into eight separate balls! If you thought it was hard to keep track of everything before, just waiting until you have eight of these babies to deal with.
With that said, that's what makes Hyperballoid so great and sets it apart from all the other games like it. The genre in particular isn't too tough, but this game changes all of that. This is a fast-paced, unrelenting experience that is fairly hard to come by in the world of computer games. Those that have trouble finding challenging games might find a lot to like here.
Also, it's worth mentioning that there are three difficulty levels, so it's easy to find just the right difficulty for yourself.
Take Your Best Shot
Hyperballoid Complete offers really fun gameplay, a nice challenge, and exciting visuals. What more could you ask for?
