A Gentleman's Game
Of all the classic games, there is none regarded as highly and with as much respect as the game of chess. This ultimate test of skill and strategy is played by people of all ages, from all walks of life. It easily transcends the status of board game and is a true masterpiece of design and ingenuity. If there is anything that could improve this already near-perfect experience, it's that the pieces be changed to medieval fantasy creatures that brutally kill each other at your whim. Yes, my friend, this is War Chess.
The concept of changing chess pieces to something other than simple statues is not a new one. Like Monopoly, dozens of hot franchises, from the Simpsons to Star Wars, have their own version of the popular past time. However, War Chess takes this idea one step further and incorporates it into a computer game in which the pawns and knights and so forth can actually kill each other in violent animations. While your grandparents might prefer the more traditional pieces, there's definitely something to be said about turning this gentleman's game into an all-out blood bath.
Great Art Design
The character designs in this game are fantastic and really display a stunning level of creativity. The two sides, white and dark, are composed of entirely different sets of characters, clearly displaying "good" guys and "bad" guys. Pawns of the white side are knights, while they are represented by skeletons on the dark side. On the white side, bishops are represented by archers, while the dark side has them as orcs. They're very fun to look at it and even cooler to see in action.
Good Audio
The sound effects are pretty basic, but they serve their purpose well enough. You'll hear the footsteps of the characters as they trot across the screen and their death woes as they meet their maker.
The music is pretty good and the eerie sound of it suits the mood well. Even though this is chess, it comes off as a pretty dark game. The music only adds to the enjoyment.
Beginners Welcome
For beginners, chess can be very daunting. Luckily, War Chess offers a pretty extensive tutorial. It will teach you all of the basics and then some. Here you will all the secrets to becoming a masterful player and you'll be able to take on the pros in no time flat!
Customization
The enviroment in which your game takes place can be changed to a variety of different locales. This is a pretty trivial feature, but it's a nice option to have nonetheless. Nobody wants to stare at the same place for too long.
Chess As You've Never Seen It Before
I'm not the biggest fan of chess, but I have to say that War Chess was right up my alley! For those who thought they didn't like the classic game, I encourage you to try this version. You just might be like me and find yourself pleasantly surprised!
