A Sea of Words to Consume

It used to be that if you wanted to learn how to type properly, you'd have to suffer through a horribly boring program that felt mundane and monotonous. Thankfully, times have changed and the world of educational games has been elevated to a whole new level.

With Typer Shark, you can vastly improve your keyboarding skills while exploring deep seas and recovering some highly lucrative treasure. These aren't the typing drills you experienced in school! Instead, there is a definite sense of urgency as you travel across the sea, challenging formidable sharks and aggressive piranha as they attempt to stop you from your treasure-seeking. And better still, there are three fun ways to play.

An Underwater Adventure

The main game mode here is Adventure. In this mode, you travel from one part of the sea to another, visiting sunken ships and recovering the riches hidden within. Naturally, in order to get at these ships, you'll need to dive pretty deeply into the water and the sea life along the way isn't exactly friendly. Hordes of sharks are on the prowl and the only way that you can hold them back is by typing the words printed on their bodies.

In the beginning, you'll only encounter one kind of shark, but later on, different species will arise with whole new challenges. To eliminate a hammerhead shark, for example, you'll need to type two words rather than one. The sense of urgency is amazing and I never thought that my heart could get pounding that fast in "just" a typing game!

With at least four difficulty settings, the challenge can be set to your current skill level. This way, even beginning typists can play, and at the same time, the most seasoned veterans can still feel the crunch of a shark looming nearby.

Diving Into the Deep Abyss

Want to really put your skills to the test? In the never-ending Abyss mode, you will dive into an ocean that has no bottom. The fish that swim near the top are less challenging because the words on their sides are shorter and the fish themselves do not swim as quickly. As you get into deeper waters, the sharks start to boast much longer and more difficult words on their sides, and it's also notable that they've suddenly picked up in speed as well, approaching your lone diver at a much faster pace.

In addition to sharks, you'll also encounter piranha that swim in large hordes. Each fish will only have a single letter on its side, but because there are so many of them and they are somewhat disjointed, the challenge is arguably even more difficult than the sharks. You may even come across robotic boss characters at some point, so prepare yourself for quite the fight!

Learning Your Lesson

After warming up with the top two fun game modes, sometimes you want to see how your keyboarding skills relate to the real world. Moving to the Typing Tutor mode, you will be presented with a series of standardized drills that will help to calculate your effective words per minute (WPM). There are dozens of drills to enjoy and it's great to finally put a real number to all that hard (and fun) work you've put in.

There are a lot of typing programs out there that are designed to help improve your keyboarding skills, but I don't think I've ever come across a title quite as invigorating and as fun as Typer Shark.
