Word Up, Yo
I'm a big fan of words. I love them so much, in fact, that I use them everyday. That's why I was super excited when I was given the task of reviewing Reader's Digest Super Wordpower. I always find these games to be a fun, exciting challenge, and this one is no different. In fact, this is the only game of its kind that I've played where I actually feel like I'm learning as I go. I very much look forward to flexing my vocabulary and expanding it at the same time.
There are two game modes for you to get lost in - Quizzler and Twister.
- Quizzler - In Quizzler, you'll be given a word and four possible definitions that could go along with it, and it's up to you to pick the right one. These words range greatly in difficulty, so don't start feeling all proud of yourself after you nail a few of them - you'll enter unfamiliar territory soon enough. However, it's a learning experience. I enjoy getting words that I don't know even more than getting ones that I do. It's definitely the most fun I've ever had losing. Each round presents you with a certain number of questions and an amount that you have to get right in order to progress to the next round. You can use hints, but you have a limited number. After each round, you'll get to take part in the bonus round. In the bonus round, you're presented with eight terms. You must match each term with the other term that means the same thing.
- Twister - Twister revolves around definitions as well, but also spelling. You're given a definition and a group of scrambled letters. You must unscramble the letters and properly spell the word that fits the definition. Again, the real fun is when you encounter a definition that you're unsure of. You have the option of swapping the letters around, hopefully resulting in some sort of combination that will spark just the right part of the word-obsessed brain. You get three hints, each one giving you a letter in the word.
Word To Your Momma!
Even though I keep gushing about it, I'm still amazed at the learning capabilities set forth by Super Wordpower. If you ever wanted to hone yourself into a human dictionary, this is definitely for you. It even has a Word Tracker feature that keeps a record of the words that you've learned, and all the words that you didn't. You have the option of taking a quiz with all the words that you failed to guess correctly, which takes everything an extra step in being educational. You can also engineer your own custom quizzes with the words of your choice.
Enough with the Word Jokes!
I love games that provide a real challenge, and Super Wordpower is one of the most difficult games that I've ever played. Unlike other games, however, you'll actually acquire skills that will put to use on a daily basis. Never before have fun and education mixed so well!
