Welcome to the Underground
Word Whomp Underground is a word game that plays similar to the classic board game Boggle. You're given a certain number of letters with the task of forming as many words as possible. Of course, they can only be real words found in a dictionary. They can't be names of any sort and definitely not gibberish; believe me, I've tried.
The Rise of the Gophers
The game's plot is hilarious and will warm even the coldest of hearts. An adorable yet determined band of gophers are hell-bent on taking this country back from the humans in an operation they call Project Drill Fur Freedom. I'm ashamed to say that it took me a minute to realize that "fur" was supposed to sound like "for." What business do I have playing a spelling game?
Along with a great story and funny dialogue, you'll also see beautiful images of various locations, including the White House. They're bright and vibrant and really help set a cheery, relaxed mood.
However, the game play is anything but relaxed!
How To Spell
I consider myself an intelligent guy with a fairly large vocabulary. Well apparently it isn't nearly as big as I had previously thought because I had a heck of a time racking up a decent score in this game; especially when I was racing against the clock!
Each level gives you six letters and a short amount of time to spell as many words as possible - with each word being at least 3 letters. When you successfully spell a word, you'll receive extra time, but no more than a few seconds.
As you spell, a gopher will make his way across the bottom of the screen, inching further with each correct word. Reach the carrot in the middle to win the round and reach the blue crystal beyond it to receive helpful clues!
Drill Baby, Drill
In order to move on to a new location, you must travel underground using the gophers' super drill. To do this, you'll have to spell even more words in the special drill levels! However, you'll often run out of letters to use. When this happens, you'll need to play more ordinary levels to earn more letters. You'll have to play a lot of the same locations repeatedly in order to stock up on letters, but you'll enjoy every minute of it.
Collecting Acorns
If you collect a certain number of acorns, which you can do by spelling 6 letter words, you'll be taken to a bonus round at the end of the current level. Here, you'll spell anagrams for bonus points.
A Pleasant Addiction
I only wanted to play a few rounds of Word Whomp Underground, but that didn't go exactly as planned. The game is just way too charming and too much fun. If I had my way I would gladly play from sunrise to sunset. If you're looking for a fun way to past the time, I could think of no better product. Just remember to take frequent breaks!
